Deferment Information

MOHELA offers a variety of payment options along with deferments and forbearances for those who qualify.

Deferment Quick Facts

  • What is a deferment?

A period of time during repayment in which you, if eligible, may suspend your loan payments.

  • Can payments be made during my deferment?

Yes, payments may be made at any time during the deferment.

  • What is the benefit of a deferment over a forbearance?

The primary advantage is the potential interest savings. During a forbearance, you are responsible for the accrued interest. During a deferment, only borrowers with Unsubsidized Stafford, Parent PLUS and GradPLUS loans are responsible for the interest that accrues.

  • How do I request a deferment?

It is your responsibility to complete a deferment request and to provide MOHELA with any necessary documentation to support your eligibility.

  • What types of deferments are available?

Deferments are available for a variety of situations including the following:

  • What if I am delinquent prior to the time period that I am eligible for a deferment?

Whenever possible, MOHELA will grant a forbearance on your loan to cover the delinquency until the deferment begins. If you are more than 6 months (210 days) delinquent, please call 888.866.4352 to discuss your options.

  • Will I be notified when a deferment is placed on my loan(s)?

Yes, MOHELA will send a letter advising you if the deferment was approved or denied on your loan(s). If applicable, we will also send a letter advising you of any forbearance placed on the loan for any delinquency prior to the deferment.
